** Provenance - from family descent, it is said that Mr Sparling was imprisoned at Lancaster Castle, at the time a debtors prison under the control of Mr Higgins. Higgins was anti-imprisonment of debtors so allowed the reliable inmates to go out to work in the day and return by night. As Sparling was a trusted character, he could work and subsequently pay off his debt. As a thank you he then presented the keeper with this silver cup.
