*Both electric violins were played in London’s West End by Dermot Crehan for Whistle Down the Wind 1998 -2001. Music for the musical was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics were written by Jim Steinman. It is based on the 1961 film Whistle Down the Wind, whose source novel of the same name was written by Mary Hayley Bell in 1958.

After the musical premièred in 1996 at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. and a concept album was released in 1998, the show premiered in the West End in 1998, when Andrew Lloyd Weber added electric Violin with pod effects to enrich the score for the West End run. 

With a rock band in the pit and the addition of the electric violin, a dynamic new sound hit London’s West End. Dermot Crehan played on the Violins for the show’s run, which extended to 1044 performances at the Aldwich Theatre, from the opening night on 1st July 1998 until it closed in January 2001. Wowed by the sound of the electric violin with the rock band, Andrew Lloyd Weber subsequently wrote again for this combination in his score for ‘The Beautiful Game’.

These violins were also played by Dermot on many movies, notably, the 2001 Movie ‘Shipping News’, starring Kevin Spacey, Judy Dench and Cate Blanchett. Here, the solo instrument was used to great effect, to emphasize the poignant melancholic atmosphere of the story line and the sound track.
