Presented to Michael John Pink by The Sultanate of Oman.

Michael was born in 1938 in London and graduated with a degree from University College London, having completed his PHD studies in 1964.

He then joined Shell International Petroleum Maatschappij (SIPM) where he served as a petroleum engineer in Gabon, USA & Nigeria. He was then appointed, in 1975, chief petroleum engineer for Shell Deepwater Drilling Company involved in drilling oil wells in Morocco and Gabon which at the time were world record depths of water.

He then moved to Norkse Shell (Norway) and in 1977 returned to Nigeria, initially as head of production geology and then as operations manager of the Easter Division, based in Port Harcourt. This followed with a spell as head of production geology with Shell in the Hague.

In 1983 Michael was posted to Petroleum Development Oman initially as Technical Director and then Managing Director from 1986 to the beginning of 1990.

As he was leaving Oman the Rolex Day-Date was presented to him, with the Omega and Eterna watches having been previously given to him as personal presents of The Sultanate of Oman for his service to the country and increasing the country's oil production and therefore revenues.

Michael retired from Shell in April 1994 as director of Exploration and Production in the Hague.
