VIENNESE GRAND

Viennese Grand piano, late 18th century

Details:

The case and key surround of walnut, with sloping cheeks.

The five-octave keyboard, FF to f3, with ebony naturals and bone overlaid accidentals.

Viennese action, the damper-lift split between treble and bass and controlled by two knee levers, the moderator by a brass-knobbed rod passing through the face-board.

The damper-lift, several hammers, moderator, hitch rail and soundboard are replacements.

New music desk and some new hammers.

Raised on four square tapering legs.

Length 89.5", 227cm, width 45.5", 115.5cm.

Restored by Michael Cole in 2006 and sold with his report on the restoration and saved original parts from the instrument.

Condition:

The new hitch plank seems firmly glued.

The wrest plank shows hair line splits, but this may be just in the top veneer.

Pitch now a tone below modern concert pitch and precise tuning is not long lasting.

Remnants of the original makers label have been saved along with the restoration report.

A new soundboard was constructed in 2006 due to very little surviving of the original.

New veneer on spine and extensive repairs carried out on the lid.

I bass string missing.

Regulation required for unblocking several notes and some dampers not functioning.

Observations noted in the condition report are based on obvious signs to the naked eye from an experienced restorer. They are designed for quick analysis of their condition, leaving interested parties to carry out their own personal inspection. Please note that actions have not been removed from instruments.
