More Information

The overall condition of the painting is good, it has been re-lined at some stage in its history, probably as far back as the late Victorian period, looking at the top edge of the picture the original canvas could well date from the 17th century rather than the 18th, there is fine craquelure to the paint surface but also finely applied impasto (thicker areas of paint) to the sitter's nose and his costume.
There is an old graze in the lower edge of the work which has old restoration applied, there may also be some slight old re-touching in places but these are minimal, the painting has dirt and old discoloured varnish to the surface, I have also mentioned that it may well be a fragment (cut down) from a larger work. It is quite a speculative painting.
