Good French double bass probably by Paul Claudot, possibly composite, bearing a repairer's label to the inner back dated 1938 and another indecipherable label, length of back 42.25", stop length 25 1/2" and vibrating string length 42 1/2" (soft case)

* This double bass was owned and played extensively by Len Skeat who was one of Britain's great jazz double bass players.  Affectionately known as "The Time Lord" for his mastery of the "3TS" of time, tone and taste, he had a career spanning more than fifty years in the highest circles of British, European and American performance. His work was regularly compared to that of his close friend and emanant bassist Ray Brown, whose major partnership was with the jazz pianist Oscar Peterson and whose own career in American jazz spanned more than half a century. He also travelled worldwide with Grappelli and was Peggy Lee’s bass player every time she came to the UK
