Interesting and rare English Provincial astronomical oak longcase clock, the triangular form brass dial with three subsidiary silvered dials at the top for seconds, minutes and hours, all with blued steel hands, the lower section of the dial with an aperture revealing days of the week over a large stationary dial engraved with the following calendrical indications: Date, Month, Zodiac Date, Zodiac Sign, Sun's Declination, Degrees and Minutes for five-day intervals all indicated by a rotating index arm engraved Sun's Index attached to a silvered lunar disc engraved with the following lunar indications: The Moon's Time, The Moon's Age, Hour Scale, Time of the Moon's Zenith, the dial plate is also engraved with flowering trees and foliage; the impressive movement has shaped brass plates conjoined by six baluster pillars, all of the wheels have six crossings, the going train has a large recoil escapement with indirect wind through the dial, the remainder of the wheel train drives the calendar indication and comprises five large wheels with six crossings taking the drive from the great wheel pinion of the going train; the formerly ebonised oak case with long door over a standard base, surmounted by a sliding tapered hood under a plain cornice, 76" high (pendulum with cylindrical ebonised rod and brass bob, single brass cased weight)
We do not know who made this clock, but think it is probably Arts & Crafts dating from circa 1880-1910, the condition appears very good and although we have no reason to believe it is not in good working order it has not been fully tested, see images for guidance, personal viewing advised.
After further consideration we think the movement is probably early 19th century, the main carcase of the case a little later and the hood made more recently so a marriage to the carcase.
