Fine pair of George III octagonal mahogany wine coolers (caisse à vin) on stands, 22" wide max, 28.5" high

** provenance - by word from the vendor these were booty from the captured HMS Kent, a British Galleon captured by the French Frigate "Confiance" in the Bay of Bengal 1800 and taken to Mauritius, the smaller "Confiance" frigate was captained by Robert Surcouf, a French privateer working for Napoleon, plundering British and other merchant vessels. The Kent was captured in a fierce battle against the smaller French ship due to Surcouf's greater navigational tactics, (described in Surcouf's son's book). These were inherited from the vendors paternal grandfather, whose Huguenot Protestant family had fled France to Mauritius before The French Revolution.
